Willie J Healey has been on the British indie scene’s radar for a while, but his upcoming debut album may well catapult him into the spotlight! The recently-released title track of ‘People And Their Dogs’ is catchy, rhythmic, and a masterclass in eccentric indie-rock.

His last EP, ‘Hey Big Moon’ was largely inspired by Americana and lo-fi surf-rock, leaving the listener with the very specific feeling of an evening spent sat on the beach, watching the world go by. It is personal and soft, and focused on themes such as romance and lust (on the song ‘best friend’s sister’, which comes with a slightly creepy video). It was overall more acoustic and dream-like than his other releases, which made for a beautiful EP. However, if the title track to his debut album, ‘People And Their Dogs’ is indicative of his new direction, Willie has taken on a rawer indie-rock sound.

The new sound is reinforced in recent singles ‘Greys’ and ‘Lazy Shade of Pink’, tracks which evoke the true spirit of the British alternative scene. Both come with music videos which have garnered attention for their bizarre imagery; in one, Willie makes out with an alien, whilst in another he sits in a tree dressed as a cowboy and is joined by some other colourful figures. The odd music video seems to be becoming a part of his identity (might I recommend the video to ‘Would You Be’, which showcases perfectly his dry sense of humour and is genuinely laugh-out-loud funny!), and he continues this with ‘People And Their Dogs’; a video which seems to take the absurdity of British culture and mixes it with some great dad-dancing and bad trouser-suits.

Regardless of your taste in tempo or mood, Willie J Healey will have a song for you. He describes his upcoming album as being “a record for anyone who likes analogue recordings of songs about feeling strongly about everyday things, like being in your bedroom or watching people walk past your window. Feeling like you're on the outside looking in & being cool with it.” The eccentric and wry slacker-rock artist will release his eagerly anticipated debut album ‘People And Their Dogs’ on 25th August.
