MADE Festival Review
Ella Downing| 28th July 2015

Last Saturday DJ heavyweights MK, Heidi, Julio Bashmore, Blonde and many more graced Birmingham’s Digbeth triangle to perform at MADE Festival. After a dismal and damp Friday, the sunshine and good vibes of Saturday delivered everything you’d want in a festival, in just a few short hours.

As a regular at the Rainbow Venues I was keen to see how the setup for MADE would look. The space had been used efficiently so that the six stages all had their own unique feel, but were within accessible range of each other. You’d think with so much crammed into a relatively small space the popularity of MADE would have made it unbearably busy yet this was far from the case. Rarely have I ever had so much space in Rainbow and it was such a godsend. The atmosphere is always ten times better when you actually have room to dance!

Although chart favourites Blonde, MK and Philip George delivered solid sets on the main stage, my personal favourites were Heidi, Claude Vonstroke and Dusky. Stand out moments for me were Heidi finishing her set with Missy Elliot’s ‘Get Ur Freak On’ and Dusky dropping Bicep’s edit of ‘Gotta Let You Go’.  The Holiday v. Moho stage was another of my favourite areas as it provided a feel good, chill out spot when you needed a cig and a breather.

On a technical front as it was a day festival MADE wasn’t subject to the usual chaos of a bigger event. Queues were manageable, there were places to sit down, bars weren’t too busy and toilets were relatively decent. Plus afterwards I got to go home to a bed not a tent- always a plus for me!

However the best thing about MADE for me was its really organic feel. Whenever I go to an event at the Rainbow Venues I always feel really at home. Sure it’s messy and dirty and intense but everyone is friendly and chatty and there’s generally just a really genuine feel to the whole thing. MADE was no exception. It had the line-up and resources of a major festival, but felt like something one of your good mates had organised because the atmosphere was just so warm and relaxed. For instance, before and after his set, I noticed Philip George wandering through the crowd and getting a feel of the place which was just really refreshing to see.  The holistic nature of MADE was definitely something you’d struggle to find at Reading and Leeds or Creamfields. And for only £30 a ticket what’s not to love!? Bring on 2016…
