Ant-Man – A big film, in a small package

Ben Cottingham | 18th July 2015

Can Paul Rudd step into Michael Douglas’ small shoes?

In terms of it’s position in the wider universe, Scott bumps into Falcon along the way, as well as a bartender who looks suspiciously like the Father of Marvel, Stan Lee… Coincidence?… All in all Ant-Man was a real surprise, full of laughs and shocks and ‘oooh that has to hurt’s’, a real blast, and a fitting end to Marvel’s Stage 2, before Stage 3, which begins with Civil War. But one last note, a warning if you will. Yes, there is a post credit scene… Two of them in fact, but if you, my humble cinema-goer, choose to sit and wait, spare a thought for us folk’s who have to clean those screens!

First of all, let me apologise for any size related jokes… They’re on the brain right now! Having just got in from watching Ant-Man, the final film in Marvel’s Stage 2 series of films, I’m a happy chap. Despite the fact that Ant-Man has slipped through the cracks on it’s opening night, earning only $22.6 million, a tiny figure compared to Age of Ultron’s $84.5 million. To any grey-suited grumpy production company businessman, this might seem to be a problem, but to me, an avid Marvel fan, this is good.

Much like the film’s hero, Scott Lang (Paul Rudd), this box office figure is small, but shows a move in a very new direction for Marvel. Thanks to director Edgar Wright, the genius behind The Cornetto Trilogy (who wrote much of the early script), Ant-Man has a comic tone before unseen in the current Marvel cinematic universe. This is thanks to a stellar cast, headed by seasoned-funny-man Paul Rudd, and down to perfect tension-comic switches… Never before has Thomas the Tank Engine instilled fear and belly laughs in such quick succession! If I sound crazy here, just go and watch the film! Other than this the film utilities macro-photography (small scale) to great effect, as you’d expect in a film about a shrinking super hero! This gives the film a very different style, and look, but with all the familiar hallmarks of a classic Marvel film.
